Experience the Colors of Impressionism at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum

I visited the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum to see the exhibition last month, “Frontiers of Impressionism: Paintings from the Worcester Art Museum,” which was held from Saturday, January 27, to Sunday, April 7, 2024

Photography was not allowed in most areas, especially near the artworks. As the exhibition’s name, I saw some works stored in the Worcester Art Museum and felt the expansion of Impressionism over the world.

I was delighted to see Monet’s water lilies up close for the first time.

I have read some books on Western art before. According to one of them, “Introduction to Western Art History” (西洋美術史入門 (ちくまプリマー新書)), some features of Impressionism include:

- The use of various colors lowers the brightness of the screen.
- Primary colors should be left as they are or placed next to less mixed colors.
- Monet banished black, which does not exist in nature, from his palette. Gray, which is as close to black as possible, is acceptable. The colors in Monet’s works are quite vivid, but as a whole, they are very bright.

I was able to experience these techniques firsthand, and glad that I was able to see the brush strokes of the paintings up close and see the spread of Impressionism.
